The 2021 U.S.$421,6 billion national budget presented by Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube under the theme, “Building Resilience and Sustainable Economic Recovery” , has been well received by govt officials. The budget will help stimulate growth and consolidate production. The budget, while retaining stability, goes further in the drive for production and growth, funded largely by collecting taxes from tax dodgers and imposing strict discipline on spending. Ncube also moved to widen tax collection nets, with new tax measures for among others, small to medium enterprises, as well as self-employed professionals. The budget blueprint envisages the economy to rebound by 7.4% in 2021 from a consecutive 2-year downturn. This will ensure strong economic recovery, building on the milestones from the transitional stabilisation programme and targeting additional support measures to cushion vulnerable households.
