YouTube has recently released the list of Africa’s most creative YouTube content creators for the #YouTubeBlackVoices Creator Class of 2021. The highly contested annual list recognises Africa’s original YouTube content creators from various genres including art, finance, business, comedy, education, health and wellness. South Africa and Nigeria both have eight representatives and Kenya has four.
From South Africa, we have Lasizwe Dambuza famously known for his comedic sketches which have gone viral leading to his comedy show on MTV. We also have Ofentse Mwase Films, a couple who create original short Films. The other creators from South Africa include Nicolette Machile also known as the financial bunny, Kay Yarms, Owamie Hlongwane, Thato Rampedi, MacG and Naledi Monamodi’s.
From Nigeria, we have Dimma Umeh whose channel centres on life in Nigeria and has more than 25 million subscribers, Akah Bants, Oscarmini and Eric Okafor who focus on all things tech, Lade Owalobi,Winnie Emanuel, Tomike Adeoye and Dodos Uvieghara.
The Kenyan content creators include the song bird Patricia Kihoro whose channel focuses on African brands, art and culture, Mumo a photographer and videographer, Mitchelle Adagala and Kaluhi Adagala.
As part of Youtube’s campaign to spotlight black voices, the winners will receive mentoring and funding. They also plan to fund over 500 black Youtube content creators from across the world in the coming years.
