Here is what is #HappeninginAfrica now! Lava and smoke being spewed from the powerful eruption of La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano could be seen in footage recorded in the early hours of Monday morning. The volcano had been under close surveillance for days by local authorities due to increased seismic activity. Evacuations began on Sunday ahead of the eruption. Over 5,000 residents were forced to leave their houses due to disaster. The Canary Islands last experienced a volcanic eruption underwater in 2011 on the El Hierro island south of La Palma.
