South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has announced that the second phase of the country’s vaccination rollout will begin on May 17, 2021. Mkhize added that the country secured a combined 51 million jabs in agreements that have been signed with various drug makers, aimed at 42 million people. According to Mkhize, 31 million jabs are from Johnson & Johnson, while 20 million will come from Pfizer.
The country is also expecting about 1.2 million vaccines from COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX). As of April 9, 2021, 1,554,975 confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country of which 53,173 proved fatal and 1,480,632 resulted in the recovery. Vaccinations to date total 283,629.
