A raid by the South African Police Service saw the seizure of nearly 2,400 doses of fake Covid-19 vaccines in Germiston east of Johannesburg. Consequently, INTERPOL issued an orange notice, warning law enforcement agencies worldwide of organised crime networks advertising, selling and administering fake Covid-19 vaccines. South Africa isn’t the only African country threatened by criminal networks trafficking fake medicines, write Richard Chelin and Craig Moffat for the Institute of Security Studies, adding that this form of organised crime will eventually reach other African countries given the rise in Covid-19 cases on the continent. Reports of counterfeit vaccines have also been made in Nigeria where the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control issued an alert about the circulation of the fake treatments and cautioned against their use.
