At least 14 pupils were killed, and dozens were injured in a stampede at a primary school in Kakamega on Monday, while the students were running down a narrow staircase.

“We have 13 fatalities out of those the 41 that were brought to this facility. Out of the four that were taken to Nala [a hospital], three of them are recuperating, they are in stable condition but we have one fatality.

The one at central hospital is stable. So we are mourning 14 young lives in total,” Anne Ngetich the Regional Police Commissioner in Kakamega County said. Footage shows parents howling in Kakamega primary school courtyard and later in a hospital where the injured and the killed were taken. Local authorities reported that the cause of the stampede is not clear yet, but an investigation had been launched into the matter.
