The bust of King Leopold II of Belgium Defaced During Antiracist Protest
The bust of King Leopold II of Belgium, who orchestrated the colonial genocide of 10 to 15 million Africans in Congo , has been defaced by protesters in Ghent, Belgium.
This also comes as an online petition was launched this week to remove all the statues of the former Belgian King Leopold II in the City of Brussels
Under his colonial regime, millions of Congolese people died. Lack of reliable sources have made it difficult to form an accurate estimation, but modern estimates range from 10 million to 15 million dead Africans. In recent years, a consensus of around 10 million deaths has been reached among historians.
In comparison, between 5.4 million and 5.8 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust by the Nazis. Yet till today very few people around the world know of the Attrocities beligum did in Africa. As if the 10-15 million African lives doent Matter.
“Despite all this, Leopold II is still commemorated throughout Belgium today with statues, ceremonies in his honour, street names, and so on.
The petition is set to end on 30 June 2020, which is the 60th anniversary of the Independence of the Democratic Republic of Congo from Belgium’s colonial rule.
